Universal Right to Vote: A Big Problem for Democratic Growth in the Third World

Universal Right to Vote: A Big Problem for Democratic Growth in the Third World

Right to vote is among the most fundamental rights people enjoy in almost all of the democratic states of the world. This right to vote is given to every adult citizen of the state, irrespective of their education, ethnicity, gender or colour, thereby making it a universal right.

Although universal right to vote is often hailed as one of the most importnat pillars holding the building of democracy strong , it has negative implications for the growth of democracy when it comes to those states that have implemented a democratic form of governance but lack important features required for the correct use of this right. Such states are mostly developing and under-developed states.

The most prominent factor which leads to the misuse of universal right to vote in these states , which has detrimental effects on the establishment of a true democracy there , is lack of education. Mostly developing and under-developed democratic states of the world do not have remarkable literacy rates, something that is non-existent in almost all the developed democratic states of the world.School and college drop out ratios are also huge in these states. Moreover, standards of education are also very poor in these states. Majority of people in these states is poor and is thus compelled to send their children to the government schools where poor quality education is provided. Resultantly, a great majority of people in these states is either illiterate or so poorly educated that it can also be considered illiterate , especially when it comes to gathering information and making opinion on the political developments taking place in their states. This opinion making ability is very important when it comes to choosing political representatives. As majority of people in these states is unable to form opinion regarding who they should vote because of lack of proper education , their right to vote is often misused. They will often vote for the candidates with greater fame and publicity or for those parties with more influence on media because they have no opinion of their own. Media , as is well known, has become a powerful tool in the hands of the powerful to manipulate people's opinion in their favor. This mainpulation becomes quite easy when majority of people over which manipulative tactics are applied is illiterate or half-educated.
