Demise of MBBS Degrees in Pakistan: Issues and Solutions
Introduction
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree has always been perceived as a prestigious and highly sought after qualification in Pakistan. There has been a declining trend in the value and opportunities attached to this degree for about past years. MBBS graduates are struggling to get jobs, posing a serious threat to the future of medical education in India.
Overproduction of Graduates
The overproduction of medical graduates is one primary reason for the decline. This lack of competition has made the market saturated due to more and more medical colleges and universities are offering MBBS programs. As a result of this oversupply, the new graduates face immense competition for limited job opportunities thus making it difficult to secure suitable positions.
Quality of Education
In Pakistan, the quality of medical education in different institutes is highly variable. Unfortunately, the quality of teaching in some universities can be lacking with graduates who may not possess necessary competencies. This lack of homogeneity has added to the woes of students, with MBBS graduates in two such colleges already facing issues when it comes location-based reservation in employment.
Licensing & Examination Obstacles
Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) taking through a roller coaster has introduced National Licensing Exam (NLE), another hurdle for MBBS Graduates. It is necessary to qualify this exam to become a licensed doctor in Pakistan however many graduates fail it due poor preparation and wide standards of medical education.
Economic Factors
The economy of Pakistan is also viewed as responsibile for the employment hardships confronted by MBBS people. Underfunding undermines the healthcare sector and recruitment of new doctors. Moreover, the public sector (which provides jobs to a vast number of doctors) is also under pressure due to budget cuts leading even fewer job opportunities.
Migration and Brain Drain
Most of the MBBS are going to other countries for better opportunities. More importantly, a country loses skilled personnel such as the kind which could help its healthcare system. Improved wages, availability of work, and better opportunities elsewhere have put migration on the rise.
Future Considerations and Suggestions
In order to tackle these challenges, some of the effective steps are:
Regulating the number of medical colleges: No new establishment in the sector should be made so that the existing institutions can maintain high standard of education.
Upgradation in the standard of education:– Amending curriculum and maintaining uniform standards across all medical colleges will result into trained professionals.
Graduate Support: Run support programs for graduates to identify job openings, prepare licensing exams and offer career counseling solutions.
Investment in Healthcare – If more investment is done in the healthcare sector, then it will generate job opportunities and doctors will get good treatment conditions.
Retention Strategies: Offering competitive salary and facilities along with better designer career development programs will help in reduction of brain drain from the country.
Conclusion
The devaluation of the MBBS degree in Pakistan is not a simple matter but rather it must be addressed through multiple channels. Pakistan can prove to be a better and stable place for its doctors through regulating the number of medical graduates, enhancing quality education methods & health service penetration within local boundaries.
