Incredible Similarity Between World War 1 and China-US Cold War

Incredible Similarity Between World War 1 and China-US Cold War

World War 1 took place in 1914 between Allied Powers led by the Great Birtain and France and later joined by the US and Central Powers led by German and Austro-Hungarian Empires. Great Britain had been the world's greatest imperial power whose empire was spread over more than 20% of the landmass of the Earth.

However, with the unification of Germany led by Otto Von Bismarck in the 1870s, Britain found a formidable competitor in Germany. It is interesting to note here that when we dig deeper in history, we find a lot of similarities between the modern day China and Germany of early 1900s.

Germany had been an emerging power which started a journey of development and industrialization in the late 1870s and soon started challenging the economic supremacy of the UK in the world. Resultantly, It had outpaced Britain's industrial production by the year 1900.Similarly, China was also an emerging power in the 2nd half of the 20th century whose upward journey on the ladder of power began in the 1970s and 80s . It has now become a global economic superpower, with its GDP crossing 13 trillion dollars. It has already become world's largest GDP in 2014 in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) and is expected to become world's largest GDP in nominal terms by 2028.

Germany also had highest population in Europe after its unification. The same is true of China. It also has world's biggest population which has also proven to be a great resource for China in its journey to economic greatness.

Similarly, Germany was not a democratic country then, and it was up against the coalition of countries which included mostly democratic countries. The same is true of China and the US . The former is not a democracy and is being led by the Communist Party of China( CCP). On the other hand, the coalition of countries led by the US against China includes mostly democratic countries of Asia and Europe.

Another similarity is that Germany had a desire for itself to be recognized as a global power and be accommodated accordingly. However, the powers of the status quo disliked the rise of Germany and , instead of accommodating its legitimate interests and giving it the place it deserved in the comity of international powers, they moved onto a confrontational course with Germany. The same is true of China now. It is not being given the place it deserves. Instead of cooperating with China in ensuring the smooth running of global affairs and resolution of global issues like climate change, pandemics ,etc., the US and its allies have decided to contain China's influence in the region. This is indeed a dangerous course if history is any guide.
